What is Chlorella?

Chlorella is a green algae.  The name Chlorella derives from two Latin words meaning 'leaf' (green) and 'small', referring to the unusually-high content of chlorophyll (the highest of any known plant) which gives Chlorella its characteristic deep emerald-green color.  Algae are a group of one-celled plants, containing no true root, stem or leaf.  This particular fresh-water, single celled microscopic plant contains a host of health building nutrients.  In addition to chlorophyll it contains vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, nucleic acids, amino acids, and  enzymes.

Following global fears of an uncontrollable population boom, during the late 1940s and the early 1950s Chlorella was seen as a new and promising primary food source and as a possible solution to the then-current world hunger crisis.  Many people during this era thought that world hunger was a growing problem and saw Chlorella as a way to end this crisis by being able to provide large amounts of high quality food for a relatively low cost.

Like Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (blue green algae), clinical studies on Chlorella suggest effects including dioxin detoxification in humans and animals, healing from radiation exposure in animals and the ability to reduce high blood pressure, lower serum cholesterol levels, accelerate wound healing, and enhance immune functions in humans.  However, the use of Chlorella for healing effects has received criticism.

What is Spirulina?

Spirulina (Spirulina Plantensis) is a microscopic freshwater plant, known for its detoxifying qualities and high concentrations of iron, beta-carotene, natural antioxidants, and chlorophyll.  Spirulina Tablets have been eaten by many cultures throughout history.

The Aztecs and Mayans used spirulina as a central part of their diet.  The Kanembu people, who live along the shores of Lake Chad in Africa, still use it today.

Spirulina tablets are an excellent source of all of the plant’s strongest qualities in a convenient form.  Spirulina tablets fulfill the body's nutritional and biochemical needs; its high iron content means that it has 58 times the iron of raw spinach and 28 times that of raw beef liver.
