Origin: Pau d'Arco is a natural herb retrieved from the inner bark of the Tabebuia Avellanedae or Tabebuia Impetiginosa, known as taheebo. The taheebo tree is grown predominantly in Central and South America has been used for centuries by the Indio tribes of South America, as well as the ancient Incas and Aztecs.

Benefits:
Pau d'Arco bark has active principles, mainly lapachol, quercetin and other flavonoids. Once the Pau d'Arco inner bark is dried and shredded it can be made into a tea which has a slight bitter or sour taste, and is brownish-colored.
This herbal tea is used:
  • by many during the cold and flu season, and is a remedy for smoker's cough.
  • as an expectorant: to promote "coughing up" by the lungs in order to free deeply embedded mucus and contaminates.
  • Candida Albicans, a fungus which causes yeast infections, has also been treated by the Pau d'Arco herb.
  • to strengthen the body's immune system

Uses:
Pau d'Arco inner bark may be used to make tea, extract, tincture, capsules, pills, powder, as well as other methods of delivery. Each option should be considered based upon the individual as well as the conditions for which the Pau d'Arco is being used. Tea is likely the most commonly used form of medicinal Pau d'Arco.

To prepare a Pau d'Arco tea:
Mix 3-6 tablespoons of the inner bark with one quart of cold distilled water into a teapot. Use a glass or stainless steel teapot, not one of aluminum, tin, or other type.

Allow the herbal tea to reach a boil, and then let it slow boil for 20 minutes or longer.  This allows the beneficial compounds such as lapacho to be disseminated. Once 20 minutes of slow boiling have passed, the compounds have been released into the tea drink, and it is ready to be removed from the heat.

Pour the tea from the teapot through a tea strainer or linen cloth, to ensure that the remaining bark is not left in the tea to be served. Honey, raw sugar and various fruit juice may be added to sweeten and enhance the flavor of the tea, without spoiling its qualities.

Recommended use:
Drink 1 cup (8 oz) 2-8 times per day. Approximately 1 tablespoon of loose bark per 8 oz is a fair ratio, slow boiled for 20 minutes.
