The Basics of Rice Bran and Tocotrienols - The Ultimate Source of Vitamin E

  Rice bran is one of the most underutilized food sources in the world. Rice has been grown for over 5000 years; but traditionally, the bran and germ have been removed for two reasons. Generally, people prefer the taste of white rice to brown rice and without some sort of processing or par-boiling, brown rice has a shorter shelf life than white rice. Rice bran and germ are full of nutrition. The challenge has been to find a cost-effective method to process the bran that also preserves the nutritive value and improves the shelf life.
  When it comes to rice growing in the wild, Mother Nature's job is to cause the germ to "sprout" to produce more plants. It is this same interaction between enzymes and oils that causes the plant to germinate that creates problems after the grain has been harvested and milled. Recently, a new class of compounds related to the tocopherols has been discovered, and these compounds are called tocotreinols. Tocopherols are rather abundant in nature, tocotrienols are rare.  Until recently, Vitamin E was thought to be composed of several tocopherols, the most powerful form of which is alpha-tocopherol. All body tissues, especially the adrenal and pituitary glands, have high concentrates of Vitamin E, but storage is mainly in the muscles, fatty tissues, and liver. Alpha-tocotrienol is 40-60 times more potent than alpha-tocopherol.  At the present time, there are four named tocotrienols. An additional 20 unnamed tocotrienols have been discovered. delta-tocotrienol is 200 times more potent than alpha-tocotrienol. This bottle contains alpha, beta, gamma, and delta tocotrienols.  These were at one time more than $4,000 a bottle in alternative cancer clinics!
